Black Obsidian

Geology meaning: Black Obsidian is a striking, glass-like volcanic material featuring a smooth, high-gloss surface. It is famous for completely lacking crystalline structures and breaking with exceptionally sharp, curved, shell-like edges.

Chemical Formula: 70%–75% SiO₂ plus MgO, Fe₃O₄ (Amorphous Volcanic Silicate Glass)

Crystal System: Amorphous (Zero crystal lattice)

Geological Formation: Formed when high-silica felsic lava erupts and cools instantly upon contact with the air. The cooling happens so fast that individual mineral atoms are frozen in place before they can arrange themselves into a geometric crystal grid. Trace micro-crystals of magnetite give it its deep, opaque black coloration.

Spiritual meaning: A dominant grounding and anchoring stone used heavily for energetic shielding and deep spiritual detoxification. It acts as an energetic mirror, reflecting hidden truths, dissolving mental tension, breaking through emotional trauma, and radically fortifying the root chakra against outside stress
